Lastly, BitComet sends much/most of its upload to other BitComet peers. Seeds aren't supposed to be heavily used for "common" chunks that many peers have - otherwise in poorly-seeded torrents, peers would put too great a strain on the limited seeds. Worse, the torrent can end up unseeded once the seed/s leave even if everyone tries to upload more than 100%. So µTorrent is left with few if any seeds to connect with on large torrents with lots of leeches/peers. In short, download speeds can drop drastically if you're running too many torrents at once. When you're splitting your upload between multiple torrents thinly, each upload slot PER torrent falls below 1 KB/sec - which is about the minimum speed to consistantly get a return download speed from whoever you're uploading to.
That's pretty good on average torrents and excellent on poorly seeded torrents.
You said you're running "quite a few" torrents at once and seeing 60-80 KB/sec download and 30-50 KB/sec upload. Barring that, it could be due to how BitTorrent or TCP/IP works. If the problem occurs even when you connect directly to the DSL modem, your connection is probably overloaded.
